Much more than just a Voice Box.

 

You already know the larynx or “voice box” plays a crucial role in our ability to produce sound and speak. But did you know the larynx is the governing body managing the approximately 20,000 breaths YOU take every day. That's over 7.5 million breaths in one year. Its job is to control and regulate air coming IN and OUT of the lungs. This same structure is also responsible for protecting the lower airway during the nearly 1,000 swallows taken each day. Its job in this case is to ensure that what you swallow is transferred to the stomach via the esophagus, and not dumped into the lungs. So, what happens if the muscles of the larynx are not doing their JOBS correctly?  ANSWER: You end up with difficulties breathing, vocalizing and or swallowing.
